Emma Dutton-Hindley
March 30, 1940 – January 2, 2021
Emma Dutton-Hindley (nee Krieger), 80, of Townbank, New Jersey, passed away at home on January 2, after a heroic battle with bladder cancer.
Born on March 30, 1940 to Henry and Catherine Krieger (nee Cornell) in Philadelphia, Emmy graduated from West Catholic High School in 1959, and worked as a Bell Telephone operator, where she met her late husband, linesman Charlie Dutton. Charlie would ring her switchboard for dates and after first hanging up on him, she accepted. They wed in 1963 and settled in Lawrence Park, Marple Township, PA. They enjoyed bowling, neighborhood parties and square dancing (all of which were very cool in the 60’s and 70’s!).
Emma dedicated her life to being a devoted and loving wife and mother. After 10 years of unsuccessful trying and miscarriages, they were blessed with a bundle of joy, Laurie Ann, who was lucky enough to inherit Emma’s beautiful blue-gray eyes. One day Laurie came home from school and found her mom transformed the basement into ‘Barbie World’ with a constructed stable, houses, and a pool for Laurie’s dolls. Forgetting both homework and dinner, the two of them spent a wonderful afternoon together playing! Emma was known as MD (Mommy Dutton) among her daughter’s friends and was always there to nestle one under her wing. Emma also loved being a Marple Newtown Tigers band parent, a teacher’s aide and an acolyte “mother” at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
A few years after Charlie passed away, Emma was lucky enough to have found love again with Bill Hindley, spent many years traveling through Europe, and retired, ‘down the shore’. She was a member of the Cape May Women’s Club, the Gardening Club and a lifetime member of the Cape May Beach Property Owners Association. She was the first chair of Townbank’s Whale of a Day basket raffles, which is now the biggest fundraiser at the annual ‘Whale of a Day’ celebration each July.
Emma was a passionate dog lover and opened her home to many rescues, mainly Samoyeds. She was also an award-winning purple martin enthusiast and loved when people stopped to enjoy her birds each summer. She was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan. She was lucky enough to be at Franklin Field when the Eagles won the World Championship in 1960 and so proud when Philly won it’s first Superbowl in 2018.
Emma is missed very much by her family and would be very happy to know you took the time to read about her incredible life.
